Maybe a science fiction writer could have penned 2020 before it occurred i.e.: people alone in cars driving with masks on, and it is hard to spot a bank robber because everyone in the bank was wearing stocking caps and a mask. But not me, I did not see 2020 coming. However, there have been many seasons of my life I have not predicted, some filled with unexpected joy, others filled with deafening sorrow. Some filled with challenges and adversity, others abounding blessings. Most seasons a mixed bag.
A year ago, my State was going into a lockdown, restrictions on gatherings caused us to cancel my daughter’s 5th birthday party. She was heartbroken, I was discouraged. It is hard to explain to a 4-year-old why they cannot see their friends.
Until this point most of my time in worship was at Church, although I did spend time in scripture and prayer it was not a primary focus of my day. Then the great pruning of 2020 occurred, and I felt called to not only be a Christian Family but to live our faith more actively.
Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
John 15:2 NKJV
I committed to seeking a deeper connection to Jesus, more consistent time in scripture, and more open dialogue with our children about our relationship with God. We do not have a home altar in the traditional sense, but we pray openly, talk about Jesus, scripture, and how we live our faith in this crazy world. My focus shifted, I care far less about what others think about my religion and choices and far more about what God thinks about my choices.
My children know the importance of God in their lives. Just this morning I caught myself telling my three-year-old, “no more requests until Mommy gets her coffee and talks to Jesus.” A few weeks ago, when my husband and I were going on a date night my daughter in a cheerful voice announced that it was great news, because “you’ll have more time to read the Bible and talk to Jesus without interruptions.” My children expect prayers at meals gladly volunteering someone else to say them of course. If God is not currently the cornerstone of your home do something today to change that.
Thank you for the seasons of pruning so that we may grow richer and finer fruit for you Jesus (John 15:2). I take assurance in knowing that You work all things together as a plan for good for those who love You and have been called according to Your plan and purpose (Romans 8:28).
Lord, I ask a special blessing over everyone who reads this message today. That they may feel Your presence in their lives and want more of You. That they may fortify their home altar, and that You may deeply bless their life and the lives of their families.
In Jesus’s name, I pray these things. -Amen
