24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Matthew 7:24-27 NIV
We have a concrete slab foundation on our old farmhouse and a portion of the slab we never covered so you can see the wear of time. It is a strong foundation for our home, just as Jesus described the importance of living by the Word of God, and building our life in service to Him creates a strong spiritual foundation.
It’s one of my favorite rooms in the house, the rough edges and imperfect finish resonate with me. Plus, it hides dirt well! 😉 In one spot there is a crack and as the years have passed, I have watched that crack change and grow. It might be interesting to admire but it undermines the integrity of my home’s foundation.
Cracks can occur in the foundation of our faith as well. The toil of time in a fallen world is enough to undermine the integrity of our spiritual faith. We must be vigilant! Maybe we are not as diligent with our hearts and minds, and we become weary as we are hit by the crashing waves of the world. That once bright flame grows dim. Have you been there? I have, and I can testify to the goodness of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who can and WILL renew and fortify our faith. Thank you, Jesus!
He builds a foundation, the bedrock of faith, it is fortified by the Word of God.
I read a devotional the other day by E.M. Bounds he said, “if our faith does not set us on fire, it is because our hearts have become cold.” I do not want a cold heart; I want to be a warmhearted servant of Jesus Christ! Help me, Lord!
But what to do, when that flame grows dim, when the cracks become deep? Ask the Holy Spirit to fill those cracks with nourishing scripture, people who feed your faith, and a Church of like-minded believers. Trust the promise in scripture of renewal and believe that Yahweh Shammah (The Lord Is There) will never leave you. The Lord answers prayers, and He hears your plea, and he loves you so!
I want to thank you, Jesus, for your love. Please fortify my faith with scripture. Let me be a warmhearted servant on fire for you Lord. Ignite my prayer life and let me serve you with zeal. I am so grateful for this day and your never quitting, all-encompassing love. In the name of Jesus, Amen!
I really like this devotion, is there a way to receive it without being on FB. I got it from a prayer request on a prayer page. Thank you for your powerful words.
