As I woke to the sounds of raindrops dancing down our metal roof and peered into the utter darkness of our room from the comfort of our bed, I knew instantly something was different. Beyond the rain and the rooster’s crow there was complete silence, no whirr of the ceiling fan above our bed or white notice emanating from the kids’ room, we were without power. Temporarily disconnected from the power source for unknown reasons. My childhood in Alaska included a handful of significant power outages sometimes lasting days. And I often dream of living an off-grid retirement beyond the reach of traditional power sources, so an absence of electricity is familiar. As I struggled to navigate the darkness, wondering where just one of the hundreds of flashlights in our home might have been hidden by my three-year-old son and recognizing my complacency I thought of the parable in Matthew of the ten bridesmaids. Check out Matthew 25:1-12 for the entire parable, my summary is brief. There were ten bridesmaids, five were prepared with extra oil for their lamps, five were ill-prepared. When the bridegroom arrived later than expected the five without extra oil were forced to go looking for oil and by the time, they returned with oil the doors had been shut and they had missed the festivities. The last verse in this parable says;

13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

Matthew 25:13 NIV

When Jesus returns, we must be ready, our relationship must be secure in Christ. When the power of the world is finally severed you need to be connected to the source, Jesus.

Lord let me use this day and all my days to foster and grow my relationship with you. For when the day comes that you return, I want to be prepared. I rest my faith confidently in the Word of God and desire a deep, personal, meaningful relationship with you Jesus. The Holy Spirit as my guide may I always stay rooted in the source of everlasting life, through you my Lord. Thy Will be done. -Amen

May the words that flow from me Lord be filled with Your message and when I am obedient may they be backed by the Holy Spirit. When I serve righteously let none of the words, I utter in praise of You fall to the ground. Help me to craft every word, may they pierce hearts and refresh weary souls. This gift is Yours; God I simply aim to use it for your glory.
