The other week in Sunday school we studied the battle of David and Goliath and for context I wanted to make sure we covered David’s anointing (1 Samuel 16: 1-12). As I was prepping for the lesson last week, and again this morning, I was drawn back to 1 Samuel 16:7. In that verse the Lord is speaking to Samuel about Jesse’s eight sons, one whom God has chosen as future king it is just a matter of finding the one the Lord has picked.

Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.

1 Samuel 16:7 NKJV

The Lord is saying to Samuel as he admires Jesse’s first presented son a presumably strapping young man (1 Samuel 16:7) that God sees things differently. He looks at their HEART. God knows his people, better than we know ourselves. I am drawn to Psalms 139:1-5, which is a beautiful description of how well God knows his people.

O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether. You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me.

Psalms 139:1-5 NKJV

Brothers and sisters in Christ, God knows you, even the dark spots you try to hide! He sees you and he LOVES you right this very second. He is not waiting for you to get that overdue haircut, gain or lose a few pounds, get a new job, or find the perfect spouse. Feelings of less than are NOT the work of our savior Jesus Christ.

You are worthy of his love because he suffered and died for you. God does not see his people the way we see one another. Lord, thank you for loving me even when I was not strong enough to love myself. Thank you for reminding me time and time again of Your faithfulness even when I rejected you.

Thank you for Your sacrifice and the forgiveness that floods my life. Lord let me see myself and those around me the way you see your people. Through the lens of Jesus. Glory to God, forevermore, let us use today to serve our King, our savior Jesus Christ! -Amen
