Lincoln Brewster in his song, There Is Power has a verse that I find myself singing often. It has been used in other songs since so anyone who listens to modern Christian music has likely heard it or a variation of it.
There is power
In the name of Jesus
There is power
Power in His name
I found myself humming it this morning when I sat down to read. There is indeed power in the name of Jesus, more power than we likely can comprehend in this life. I was reading in Isaiah this morning where he is prophesying about the coming of Jesus.
And his name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 NKJV
Jesus was true all those things, He protected the vulnerable, loved beyond ethnicity or gender, and welcomed ALL into the Kingdom of God. He is ALL POWERFUL yet wants a personal relationship with each of us. Sometimes that is hard for me to wrap my brain around. The same Jesus that shed tears of compassion at the grave of Lazarus (John 11:1-44) will rage a mighty battle at the end of days as foretold in Isaiah.
He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth
Isaiah 11:4 NKJV
Jesus told Martha at the tomb of her brother Lazarus,
“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die, and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
John 11:25-26 NKJV
Well, do you believe this?
Grappling with the overwhelming power, mercy, and grace of our Lord and Savior is normal but just as I might doubt the blue color of the sky on an overcast day that does not make it less true. There is power in the name of Jesus our King, who sacrificed His life, shed His blood, and took on the immeasurable weight of our sins for OUR salvation. That is the power in the name of Jesus.
Jesus, thank you for the gift of salvation a gift given freely through grace and faith. Through You, my sins have been washed clean, and although I may stumble Your love is unwavering. You are all POWERFUL and yet you want a personal relationship with each of us. Just as the sky is blue, You Lord are good and true. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, there is power in your name.
-Amen
