I love the writing in the Psalms, and I enjoy unpacking the verses while sipping a coffee in front of our woodstove on a lazy morning. From my blanket nest on the couch surrounded by my furry companions, I seek refuge from the world, in His word while waiting for the sun to grace the day. My journey today is in Psalms chapter 2, verses 10-12, thank you for joining me.

10 Therefore, you kings, be wise;

    be warned, you rulers of the earth.

 11 Serve the Lord with fear

    and celebrate his rule with trembling.

 12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry

    and your way will lead to your destruction,

 for his wrath can flare up in a moment.

    Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Psalms 2:10-12 NIV

10 Therefore, you kings, be wise;

    be warned, you rulers of the earth.

Verse 10 is a shoutout to the rules of the earth. Whew, thank goodness this isn’t directed at us, oh wait that is us we are the rulers of the earth. Pay attention.

11 Serve the Lord with fear

    and celebrate his rule with trembling.

Now we get into the sticky stuff that can get us tangled up like the quicksand I feared growing up. How did a child growing up in Alaska develop an irrational fear of quicksand? We will need to save that for another day back to verse 11! This verse uses words we do not typically put together like “fear” and “celebrate” or “celebrate” and “trembling” but when we unpack this verse, we see the call to serve. To humbly serve our King, the one who sacrificed himself for us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:7-8). This was not a sacrifice like taking an extra shift at work to cover for someone who has plans. His death was torturous, the murder of the only sinless human who ever walked the face of the earth, for a bunch of rotten people who could not and would not stop doing bad things. Who would do that? Jesus would, and he did! That is why we fear and celebrate Him.

 12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry

    and your way will lead to your destruction,

 for his wrath can flare up in a moment.

    Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Fully surrender to Jesus, worship, and give praise! I saw a shirt one time it had a picture of Jesus on it and read, “I found Jesus” it tickled me because although I understood the intent of the shirt Jesus was never lost. We do not need to find Jesus, the world does not need to find Jesus, we need to submit to Him, he already rules! His reign is forever, when we accept that fact, we will be blessed with a true joy only available through submission to our rightful King, Jesus.

We do not need to find you Jesus; we need to recognize your reign. We need to come before you in awe and reverence this day and all our days. We need to surrender to you and the leading of the Holy Spirit. We need to let your light shine so bright in our lives that others are drawn to the beacon of salvation, found only in you. Thank you, Jesus! -Amen
